How are parents involved in their child’s education?

There are basic ways involved parents assist their child’s education. How many of the following do you presently do? Are there areas of involvement that you want to implement?

Basic parental involvement in education typically means:

* Parents participate in regular, meaningful and two-way communication with their child’s teachers.

* Parents teach their children how to behave at school. They teach their children the purpose of school. The school is a place to learn where children are expected to try their best each day to learn as much as possible.

* Parents encourage their children in a variety of ways to learn, at school and at home.

* Parents work with their child’s teachers to help correct their child’s learning or behavior difficulties as identified at school.

* Parents provide an age-appropriate home study area and study times for their child.

*Parents know their child’s grade level curriculum. They know what is being taught in every subject throughout the year.

*Parents monitor their child’s studies. They use age – appropriate methods to monitor their child to make sure all assignments are turned in on time.

*Parents periodically provide an at home review time. They sit down with their child to review skills previously taught at school. This practice builds mastery of skills.

*Parents build age-appropriate independent study skills during homework time. They ‘wean’ their child from parental dependance when their child is ready.

*Parents keep track of their child’s test scores and review any missed or incorrect answers to questions with their child.

*Parents praise their child’s successes and help them learn from their failures.
