Nine Tips to Help Parents Develop Successful Students!

Tip 1: Using Questionnaires to Connect with Your Children – Know Your Child.

Children grow and change, so it can be helpful to use questions like the following ones to understand your child’s current likes and dislikes. Parents can discuss and answer these questions together or individually and then ask their child the same questions. Compare your answers to your child’s answers. Remember children change and so do their likes and dislikes.  You can modify this list of questions by subtracting or adding your own questions. You can take this interesting activity to the dinner table to create family connections through conversations. Try reversing the questions by replacing the word child’s with, Mom’s or Dad’s.     How much does your child know about you?

1What is your child’s favorite color?

3.  What is your child’s favorite song?

4.  What is your child’s favorite TV show?

5.  What is your child’s favorite book, story, or game?

    6.  What is your child’s favorite holiday?

Tip 2: Parents of successful children tend to teach their children how to apply behavioral control by setting limits.

Helping your children set ‘boundaries’ can play a significant role in their life satisfaction and mental well-being. From Pre-K through high school, you show your love by setting age-appropriate boundaries so that your children can safely explore their passions.

Tip 3: Parents of successful children tend to promote effort.

When a child achieves 100% on a test, it can be helpful to remind your child that they achieved the grade because they put forth the effort to study their spelling, etc. This strategy can affirm your child’s effort. In addition, it can help your child avoid viewing any future failure as evidence of un-intelligence but rather as a challenge to put forth effort when striving for success.

Tip 4: Parents of successful children tend to create their own family quality time.

Pre-K – High School – Schedule a daily special time. Let your child choose an activity to complete together and spend at least 15 minutes of uninterrupted time completing the activity. You are showing your child love and that your child is important.

Tip 5: Parents of successful children tend to promote education.

Educators have long known that promoting education at home is a tremendous asset to children. They also recognize the importance of reading and studying at home. However, it is also important to begin early to teach math at home. Mastery of early math skills is another way to improve your child’s achievement. Math is a crucial part of your child’s education. Try to include it in your child’s home study.

Do You Know What is Going on at School?

Many parents find it helpful to remind their children why they are going to school. Parents of successful children tend to teach their children that they have an important job at school each day. Their job is to learn as much as possible in every class!  It can be helpful to ask children specific questions daily about their child’s subjects. To get the answers you need, it can be helpful to ask more than yes or no questions. You can begin by asking about their friends and then asking about their subjects. Contact your child’s teacher, Pre-K-high school, if you cannot get the answers that you want from your child. Praising your child for positive learning experiences at school can open future conversations about your child’s day at school.

Tip 6: Maintaining healthy family relationships contributes to the development of successful children.

Developing healthy relationships to maintain a non-conflictual home can foster the development of emotionally healthy children. Children from non-conflictual homes, which promote communication and working together as a family, typically fare better than those who do not have the same opportunities.

Tip 7: Parents of successful children tend to require their children to do chores. Chores can promote responsibility and independence.

Remember, if they’re not doing chores, they’re doing something else. Do you know what that is?

Tip 8: Parents of successful children tend to teach their children social skills.

What makes a child self-assured and socially competent? Educators have observed correlations between a child’s social skills and their success in school and later in life. For example, they found that children who have been taught social skills can function independently. These children are typically able to resolve age-appropriate problems on their own, understand their feelings and those of others, and are helpful to others. In addition, they can function independently without prompting in age-appropriate social activities.

Tip 9: Parents of successful children tend to help their children set appropriate goals; and help them attain their goals.

Parents’ expectations have a large effect on their child’s attainment. Setting goals that are appropriate for your child can help your child achieve life-long goals.
