The Fort on Fourth Street

by Lois Spangler
Ages 5-9 Grades K-4 Bilingual (EN/ES) STEM / Physics NSTA Recommended

Real Science. Serious Fun.

Physics often feels intimidating, but it's simply the science of how things work. The Fort on Fourth Street breaks down abstract concepts into tangible fun, helping children (and parents!) overcome science anxiety.

Special thanks to the educators at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for verifying the accuracy of the science in this book.

Science Hidden in Rhyme

Through Kathleen's adventure, children encounter wheels, wedges, screws, pulleys, levers, and inclined planes. Early readers love the rhyme; middle graders grasp force and motion; and upper elementary students begin to understand the physics of "work" scientifically.

From Page to Hands

Real learning takes root when science becomes a lens for understanding the world. By constructing a cardboard ramp or designing a simple lever, families can spark lasting curiosity. We help you turn a fear of physics into a love of building.

A Book That Grows With Children

In kindergarten, your child delights in the rhyme and cheers for the fort. By second grade, they're naming machines in the real world. By fifth grade, they're connecting Grandpa's pulley to force, load, and mechanical advantage. One story, one beloved grandfather, one backyard fort—and years of deepening discovery.

Six simple machines. Infinite curiosity. One book for every stage of childhood.
